THE INVENTION OF THE BUTTERFLY

THE INVENTION OF THE BUTTERFLY

"The Butterfly Workshop" is a beautiful puppet play for kids based on the successful kids book by Giaconda Belli.

In this scene the little puppet inventor interacts with a animated blackboard (back projection). After years of struggle and countless days and nights of work he finally creates something most beautiful: a yet unknown, beautiful as a flower and flying like a bird.

CREATING THE BUTTERFLY

The animations are based on the drawings by Franz Zauleck.
I carefully animated those original drawings, trying to keep the beautiful simplicity and "analogue" charme of the chalkboard sketches.

This is a nice way to use computers - as the second almost invisible step in the process. Computers can create a lot of magic without constantly boasting of it.

THE NIGHTMARE

THE NIGHTMARE

The litte Inventor is obsessed by this beautiful vision he once had and which he desperately wants to come true. He's working far too much and totally loses contact with his life and his friends. In his nightmares the wind, the volcano, the thunderstorm and a snake speak to him.

Franz Zauleck created rough sketches, drawings and paintings. I scanned all the material and focussed on those fascinating structures of ink, paint and brush strokes. Once again I definitely wanted to keep out any typical digital aesthetic - just giving some life these original analogue works.
