TRAVELLING THE WORLD OF BRAVE NEW MEDIA AND ITS SEVEN SEAS

A PERSONAL NOTE BY SEBASTIAN M. PURFÜRST

"We never see the same thing when we also hear;

we don’t hear the same thing when we see as well."

(—Michel Chion)

I have two great passions: it's music and it's the picture.

In 2002 I started together with my dear colleague and friend Christian Mahler "LEM-STUDIOS" to fuse together two fundamental dimensions of light and sound into our idea of a world of brave new media.

The senses of seeing and hearing fundamentally influence each other in our perception — so both dimensions were equally respected and sensitively taken care of in our ideas, our concepts, our compositions and productions from day one.

The convergence of media totally liberated and democratized the media production processes. A laptop is a soundmachine and musical instrument, an image generator, an editing suite, an photo lab, a typewriter and wonderful communication tool. The technical and aesthetic boundaries no longer exist, the auditory and visual digital information can be linked and translated in endless combinations. The old utopian dreams of synaesthesia, visual music and gesamtkunstwerk are part of our everyday working life in our studios.

In 2006 Christian Mahler started to focus primarily  on his teaching as professor for motion design  in Berlin and later Hildesheim. I decided to continue LEM-Studios as the open hub, experimental  lab and collaborative network of artists and engineers it had grown over the years.

No man is an island — I've had the great pleasure of collaborating with highly creative people over the last years, in various constellations and locations. We made a lot of wonderful projects come true because of a great team effort.

Most and for all my long term artistic collaborator and friend Markus F.C. Buhl is an important support, a passionate renaissance man with whom I share countless special interests from endless lines of programming code for our Alien Essentials audio software over the art of deep sampling to the various qualities of film grain that might just be the icing on the cake.

A lot of productions require highly specific technical skills and knowledge which are brilliantly and elegantly solved by the audio wizard of OZ, Markus "Hossi" Hossack. If I run out of channels, sync or steam - I simply ask him.

Besides my commercial work I always had great interest in supporting independent music –, dance — and theatre scene with various works for the Hannah Ma Dance Company in Luxemburg and South Africa, productions at Deutsches Theater (Berlin) and Staatstheater Mainz or our own independent Berlin project SONICONOCLASM.

I am very grateful for this huge palette of creative challenges with so many wonderful people. My creative Fernweh is as strong as ever and I love travelling the world of brave new media and its seven seas.

P.S. "LEM" was always an insider reference to the polish science-fiction author Stanislaw Lem. We simply loved his visionary novels where science-fiction, political and social were woven into fantastical worlds.

Only  years later I discovered that NASA had named their lander spacecraft LEM (Lunar Excursion Module) in their Apollo Program in the 60s.

Both associative links are wonderful.
